What can you do with time? Nothing...

Have you ever met that person who thought their one thousand dollar shoes were the most valuable thing in the world, or that person who thought their grades were the most important thing in the world? Ok. I can see where the grades were coming from, but the shoes? That is complete nonsense. Time, by far, is the most valuable thing in the world, and no one can argue that this isn’t true. What can you do with a pair of shoes that you spent your whole life savings on without time? You need time, first of all, to have been able to save up the money to get that pair of shoes and to enjoy your time with them. As for grades, they can’t do anything unless you have time past high school to show your grades to college and job applications. In “The Diamond as Big as the Ritz,” Barrack Washington’s time was “consumed…completely” and all his wealth just disappeared. This shows that no matter how much wealth, power, etc. you have, you won’t be able to have it unless you have t...

The Present or The Past?

Image
In The Great Gatsby , Nick tries to tell Gatsby that you cannot recreate the past, but Gatsby insists,  “why of course you can” with money. First of all, money cannot buy a lot of things, and time is definitely one of those things. Also, I believe that the past can be recreated. However, if one learns or already knows about the past, he or she cannot artificially manufacture that past event. We all know that the past and the future exist, but does the present exist? Many would argue that there is a present and even the dictionary argues that “right now” is the present. What is “right now” though? Some people may say it’s today or something they are doing at the time. I believe that the present is the exact moment that you are living. You cannot see that exact moment, however,...

Money or No Money?

No one can say they’ve never been jealous of that one person or friend at their school that was  extremely rich and had every single new thing there was. When I was little, just like Nick in The Great Gatsby , I was always jealous of the rich kid’s “freedom with money.” Whenever I asked my  parents for a new toy, I would get turned down. Seeing the rich kid always playing with the newest trending toy made me wonder why I couldn’t be like him. Now that I have grown older, I have realized that money isn’t everything. I know this is the most cliché saying ever, but it is true. Although money can buy you any object you want like mansions, private jets, summer cottages, an island, the newest iPhone, twenty-thousand dollar shoes, designer brand clothing, etc. (the list could go on forever), money cannot buy you anything abstract. Yes, money can technically buy you happiness if you are happy with the items that you bought, but would you really be happy if t...
