I’ve always wondered how other people look at luck and how it affects different people in different ways. Obviously, luck is the chance of something happening rather than your own decision, but luck can be perceived in so many ways. What some people consider lucky, others may consider unlucky. For instance, some may say that Pilate is unlucky to be born without a navel. With people constantly asking, “where’s your navel,” and people constantly leaving her, the situation is without a doubt an unlucky one. However, Pilate is also lucky because her not having a navel is what caused her to be so strong. Despite what situation is considered lucky or unlucky, I feel that almost all of the time, it is a lucky situation. Even if you made a huge mistake and your life is ruined forever, you learned something from it and you can improve your further decisions from that lesson. What does motivation come from? Is it from your surroundings or your brain? In many cases, your friends, family, and even strangers can help motivate you. However, in Pilate’s case, society did not help her at all. With statements like “where’s your navel” (Morrison 143) and “she was to leave” (Morrison 144) being thrown at her constantly, she still stood strong and motivated herself to move on and do the exact same thing, only to be brought with the same obstacle. The situation of Pilate got me thinking about our lives. Everything possible was against Pilate, yet, she still motivated herself to live life as she pleased and not give up. However, in our lives, we’re blessed with parents that will support most of our decisions and help us with our lives. In my case, there hasn’t ever been a moment where I felt hungry and there was no food at the table, or a moment where I didn’t have a bed to sleep on. What really is color? It is something that cannot be described or identified without saying its name,  yet we see it EVERYWHERE. It’s hard to make sense of it especially when it is something that we see and something we just put a name onto. In the world, color represents so many things, and we tend to relate them to specific ideas in our head. For instance, in the novel Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison, velvet roses were red, silk wings were blue, and the snow was white, and all together, the three colors symbolized freedom. It’s crazy how if you mention a color in the world, past and present, that people would know what you’re talking about. A couple hundred years ago, when you heard black, you would immediately think of slavery, and white would immediately be thought of as power. According to Sontag, images should only be viewed when it “leads to action or knowledge.” In the world however, there’s more than just images that shouldn’t be viewed just out of curiosity or enjoyment. A big part of everyone’s life nowadays is music, and you can’t tell me you’ve never listened to a song with an inappropriate word in it. Children exposed to this type of music will learn from it and apply it in their own lives. Is the potential risk of clouding a child’s mind worth the enjoyment of others? I think songs with inappropriate meanings and words in them are not necessarily harmful for adults, but it is the immature children that don’t even know what the meanings are yet that scares me. A main source of this type of music comes from radios. Most people don’t drive around dead silent in their car, and most people resort to the radio.
